Jeff followed Mickey as he stormed through the police station corridor. It was finally the end of their shift. The steam cloud of fury coming from Mickey was so intense, Jeff knew this wasn’t going to be a good night. Carrying his kit, Jeff watched Mickey vanish around a hall. Jeff stopped, looking for someone; the sergeant, the lieutenant, anyone!

But at the end of shift, no one on their watch was left. Jeff didn’t want Mickey to run into Cochran at the moment. Off duty, both armed? It would be worse than on duty.

“Fuck!” Jeff couldn’t find anyone that would help and be discreet. He gave up and entered the locker room. Mickey was already hanging his gear and his uniform was in a pile on the floor to be sent for dry cleaning.

Jeff tucked his kit into his locker and began undressing. He tried to keep alert for Cochran but was so exhausted he didn’t know if he could prevent an inevitable conflict.

“I have to get off patrol,” Jeff muttered to himself as he hung his heavy gun belt up, taking his pistol out and putting it into his waist pack and pinning his badge into his wallet. He changed into his shorts and T-shirt, sniffing his pits and hating summer. The vest was a heat trap.

A loud metallic bang sounded and Jeff turned to look over his shoulder. Mickey, appearing homicidal, stood still after he had slammed the locker door.

Jeff finished changing and he too had his uniform in a ball to be sent to the cleaners. “Come on, Mick.” He tilted his head to the door.

As they were leaving, Cochran entered the locker room, still in uniform, obviously intending on changing and going home. Jeff immediately body-blocked Mickey, forcing Mickey to hit the wall of sinks, allowing Cochran to walk by. The two sneered at each other, but no words were exchanged. Jeff grabbed Mickey’s shirt and gave him a good shove to the doorway out.

He heard Mickey say, “I will kill him.”

“Let him hang himself.” Jeff kept nudging Mickey, first to drop off their uniforms for cleaning and next to the exit.

Once they were outside, Jeff blew out a breath of frustration and they walked to the lot where Jeff’s car was parked. “You’d make a lousy supervisor.”

“Don’t wanna be one.”

“He’s provoking you. If you let him, he’ll get you to do something you’ll regret.” Jeff opened the door locks and sat behind the wheel.

Mickey dropped heavily on the seat beside him, tossing the bag with their dirty T-shirts on the floor by his feet. “If he goes around telling everyone we’re fags, how long you think it’s going to be before someone believes it and separates us?”

“Come on. Everyone knows we’re best friends. All partners end up being close comrades. Shut up, will you? I have a fucking headache.”

Mickey exhaled loudly and rubbed the back of Jeff’s neck as Jeff pulled out of the parking lot.

“Ow. Right there.” Mickey hit a sore spot. “I swear its tension.
